Title: Bush Medicine Leaves

This vibrant work by Abie Loy Kemarre, created in 2023, brilliantly illustrates the iconic theme of bush medicine leaves that has brought renown to this third-generation Utopia artist. Titled Bush Medicine Leaves, this acrylic on canvas painting (90 × 83 cm) showcases Abie's unique and contemporary vision for this traditional subject inherited from her grandmother, the celebrated Kathleen Petyarre. Through her distinctive technique, blending extremely fine pointillism with bold geometric compositions, the artist depicts the sacred medicinal plant in its entirety, from the seeds from which the leaves unfurl, creating a visual explosion of life and energy.

With its characteristic vibrant palette harmoniously combining white, ochre, black, and golden touches, this canvas generates hypnotic optical effects that convey the power of the sacred. The leaf motifs unfold with an energy and dynamism that reflect the spirit of the Awelye women's ceremonies, while the composition captures the vital importance of this plant, which Anmatyerre women harvest at different times of the year for its multiple medicinal properties. This work, accompanied by its certificate of authenticity, perfectly embodies Abie Loy's artistic innovation; while remaining faithful to the ancestral narratives she safeguards, she has developed a resolutely contemporary visual language that has earned her exceptional international recognition.

Abie Loy Kemarre (born 1972 in Utopia, Northern Territory) is recognized as a major figure among the third generation of Utopia women painters, a direct heir to Emily Kame Kngwarreye and her grandmother Kathleen Petyarre, who trained her from 1994. Daughter of Margaret Loy Pula (winner of the 2012 Wynne Prize) and niece of Gloria Petyarre, she belongs to the Eastern Anmatyerre linguistic group and resides in Iylentye (Mosquito Bore). Holder of custodial rights over the Bush Hen Dreaming passed down by her grandfather, she quickly developed a unique style characterized by remarkably fine pointillism and vibrant color compositions. A two-time finalist for the prestigious Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (1997, 2001), her works are featured in the world's most important collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Seattle Art Museum, the Musée des Confluences in Lyon, the Bridgestone Museum in Tokyo, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and numerous prestigious private collections including the Kelton Foundation and the Kerry Stokes Collection. Exhibited internationally for over thirty years in Australia, Europe, the United States, and Asia, Abie Loy Kemarre has established herself as one of the most innovative and captivating voices in contemporary Aboriginal art.
